Weight Shifting Exercise
Description:
Stand tall near a wall/chair for support, feet hip-width apart. Tighten your core gently and keep your shoulders relaxed. Slowly shift your body weight onto your right leg until you feel more pressure under the right foot (don’t lift the left foot). Hold steady, keeping the knee soft (not locked). Return to the center. Now shift onto the left leg in the same way. Move slowly and smoothly—no jerks. Repeat for the prescribed reps. Stop if you feel sharp pain or dizziness.
Benefits:
Improves balance and stability in standing. Trains safe weight-bearing and confidence while walking. Strengthens hip and ankle control for better posture. Reduces fall risk by improving body awareness. Helps prepare for gait training and stair activities.
Uses in Medical Conditions:
Stroke / hemiparesis (to improve symmetrical weight bearing). Knee osteoarthritis (to improve controlled loading and balance). Ankle sprain rehab (to restore stability and proprioception). Post-fracture lower limb rehab (gradual weight acceptance). Parkinson’s / elderly balance issues (to reduce freezing and falls).
